Alexey Martí was born in Havana, Cuba.  Alexey started to play congas when he was seven years old, inspired by the Afro-Cuban religious ceremonies celebrated in his grandparents’ house.





When he was 16 years old, he started to study percussion under the rigorous guidance of Master Oscar Valdés, percussionist and singer of the famous Cuban group “Irakere.” Alexey started to play professionally with Diákara,” Afro-Cuban-Latin Jazz group formed by Oscar Valdés.

Alexey Martí continues his musical career in the city of New Orleans since 2008, where he currently lives. He studied in the University of New Orleans (UNO) Jazz Program. He has his own jazz quintet, “Alexey Martí and Urban Minds,” which opened for the pianist Chucho Valdés’s concert in 2012.  Alexey has been nominated for the third time to “The Big Easy Music Awards” in New Orleans, in the “Latin,” and “World” categories (2014, 2015, and 2016.) He has performed in the New Orleans Jazz Fest since 2009. 

Alexey composes arranges, and produces the songs for his jazz quintet, and for his other musical bands (salsa, and funk).  He is in the production process of his Afro-Jazz-Cuban CD that includes several of his songs such as “Journey,” “In Bicycle,” and “A Gringo in Havana.” 

Alexey Martí has shared the stage with Herlin Riley, Delfeayo Marsallis, David Torkanowsky, Davell Crawford, Jason Marsallis, and Bill Summers.  He has played with different groups: ¨Los Hombres Calientes,¨ ¨The Wild Magnolias Mardi Grass Indians,¨ ¨The Headhunters,¨ and the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra. He recorded the percussion for the new TV series “Roots” (2016.)  He currently composes music for documentaries: ¨Chasing Dreams: A Leah Chase Story,” and “Color Code” (Cuban documentary.)

Alexey has recorded several CDs, such as “Canto a la Amistad,” “Babalú,” “Gardi” (2004), “Lo Que Tú Querías” (2008), and “Olhos Nos Olhos” (2008).  He also recorded with Bill Summers, and the Headhunters “Platinum” (2011), and Delfeayo Marsallis (2016).
